Lakewood Christian Middle School Social Studies

6th: Ancient Civilizations

7th: Medieval Times and Early Modern Times

8th: Creating America

Description:

            Welcome to LCMS social studies.  Depending on your grade level, we will be studying ancient times all the way through the Civil War of the United States of America.  You will not be expected to memorize everything, but you will be expected to learn about cultures, governments, economics, wars, geography, religions, advancements, interactions, and more.  So prepare yourself to absorb information.

Grading:

Grading for this course is straightforward and if you maintain a well-organized portfolio (discussed below), regularly participate during in-class activities, complete projects, and sufficiently pass chapter tests, than you will achieve a positive grade.  Due dates will be regularly designated later.

> Chapter Portfolios – 42.5% (~30 pts.)

Chapter portfolios act as a responsibility tool; they will generally include a collection of chapter 1) QUIZZES, 2) REVIEWS, 3) MAPS, 4) WARM-UPS, 5) NOTES, and 6
)
PARENT SIGNATURE to ensure parental awareness.  These portfolios also make for wonderful study guides that will prepare students for tests, which make up a large portion of the students grade.

> Activities / Projects – 15% (~10 pts.)

These points grade a student's level of participation in class and productivity in and out of class.  Every student is expected to be actively participating during class, as a group and as an individual.  Some projects, such as reports, will require students to invest time outside of class. These points will not be earned if the student fails to participate, over socializes during the class hour, or does not complete projects.

> Chapter Tests – 42.5% (~30 pts.)

Tests will be assigned for each chapter (generally two per month). Being actively involved in class, maintaining chapter portfolios, and taking some time to study before the tests will help students successfully pass chapter tests.

One more note regarding portfolios:

            These may sound intimidating at first, but they are not much more than a stusent-organized study guide.  Students will need a 3-ring binder to store and organize 1) QUIZZES, 2) REVIEWS, 3) MAPS, 4) WARM-UPS, 5) NOTES, and 6) PARENT SIGNATURE.  All of these components will be collected and graded at the chapter test dates, which come about every two weeks. Please ensure that your child is keeping track of their paperwork and is ready to turn-in their portfolio on the test dates.  When turning in a portfolio, the student will be required to have 5 tabs and a thin three-pronged report folder with a clear cover.

*Please understand that actual points and percentages may vary; these estimates are not final.
